The Perfect Crime: A Story of Truth or Fantasy Peter Hindley and Susan Goodsell

picThe Perfect Crime: A Story of Truth or Fantasy

Events have accurately been recorded since the time of Alan’s death; they combine to reveal an intriguing story. Did he die naturally or was he helped in some way? Has a crime or two taken place? Some may think so. Maybe there is a conspiracy; if so how far it may extend is unclear. Nothing is quite as it should be.

This unique book evolves from a simple account to a vast scandalous exposé, a true and topical account showing a fascinating view of human nature, society, and the establishment in the United Kingdom. Many questions are posed for the reader and evidence is laid bare as you take a journey of discovery.

The story and writing style changes drastically as the twists and turns in the narrative expose themselves; ultimately it reaches a logical end, but that is not the end of the story. A sequel is already underway.

Independent 1 bAbout Peter Hindley

Peter Hindley is a coach to dance competitors and is a jury member for international dance competitions. He left England in 2007 for a new life in France and has been recording events since his brother’s unconventional death in 2002.

photoAbout Susan Goodsell

Excerpt:

We have accurately recorded the events near the time of Alan Hindley’s death, who was a brother to Peter and father of Susan, the two authors of this account, and what followed; they combine to reveal an intriguing story. Did he die naturally or was he helped in some way? Has a crime or two taken place? Some may think so. Maybe there is a conspiracy; my lawyer certainly thought so; how far that conspiracy extends is unclear. We are certain that nothing is quite as it should be. Nevertheless this account shows a fascinating view of human nature, English society and the workings of the establishment in the United Kingdom. The story is so bizarre that it could well be fiction, and that is why I have added “A story of truth or fantasy” to the title. What is frightening is that it is all absolutely true.

The normal formalities that follow a death were not adhered to after Alan’s demise: Why the mandatory procedures were bypassed may not be evident, but during the course of our nine year account they certainly do become evident.

Why did his wife act as she did and who aided her? These and so many other questions will become apparent.

In this case what is certain now is that the will and wishes of the deceased, Alan Edward Hindley of Paignton, Devon, has not been adhered to and the UK law and establishment did nothing to aid its rectification: The laws relating to Wills are fatally flawed and the government is fully aware of that. As named executors we have been denied the right to execute his wishes. You may think this is not possible, but it is, and it has proved to be absolutely legal.

His wife, Wendy, acted as sole executor of her husband’s Last Will and Testament without the other two named executors and we reveal how simple it is to do just that. Why she felt this was necessary will ultimately be disclosed. You will learn how the solemn duty of executing a will can be mal administered in a totally legal way and without fear of retribution.

We have experienced many twists and turns along our path of discovery and these have been reflected in both the different styles and structure of the book. Our journey has taken us to numerous office doors and has led us into the heart of the halls of government, where events have made it very apparent that what we were witnessing was true injustice and unchecked corruption within the United Kingdom. It is for this reason that we felt it necessary to pen our story, to be able to share our account with you and all our other readers, who have been reading an abridged account on the Internet since May 2008; it is very much in the public’s interest to be aware of what can go wrong and does go very wrong daily.

We have been told that Alan died in his home during the evening of 14th March 2002 in more than one place, and all on the same night, the last time anything vaguely like this happened was two thousand years ago (please forgive the last statement, it is not meant to offend); but first a little background information about the family.

All I ask in a form of payment is a review and a referral so your friends can spend the money!

Only 5 days guys so get to downloading!!

The event is listed on my FB page, please share it with your friends.

To help you decide, her is a review from Romance Novels In Color:

Love Forever After by Christina OW is an amazing tale, filled with sorrow, pain and healing. How do you survive the loss of your soul mate? How does a person come back from that type of bone-deep wounding? This story explores that premise and the idea that even in the darkest hours, comfort can be found.

To start with, the main players are the heroine Kristy, who simply put is an Afro-American tree hugger, and the hero of the tale William is a straight laced British male. They were opposite in all ways, but the differences only serve to highlight the couple’s compatibility.

It all begins with Kristy’s funeral and her grieving widower standing graveside at an empty casket. You are taken through the phases of his pain, starting with the aforementioned service, with details of the couple’s acceptance of each other (the hero has a fund for bail money and the police know her by name), and then taken on a journey to the years beyond.

The hero goes through many bumps in the road on the way to healing. His family (not to mention Kristy’s) thinks he’s lost his mind when he blatantly speaks about his wife as if she is still alive. He is forcibly sent on leave from work for the same reason. There were many twists and turns that made this story not only incredible, but inspiring.

As a reader, I found that the journey made with the hero during his pain was a real one and extremely relatable. I, like many other people have lost loved ones, and the emotions that our hero exhibits are real. The pain he endures is honest.

There were a scant handful of grammatical errors in the writing, but the story was so emotionally riveting that I barely regarded them during the read.

This story is wonderful enough to go into print and sell quite well as the author is talented enough to make the unusual aspects in this novel work well. This story is heart wrenching in the extreme and honestly, I cried like a baby during several scenes. There is no lovemaking in this story, but even as a fan of the erotic I didn’t need that from this read. All that I wanted was for William to find some sense of peace with his loss. I was invested in this story from page one (which is rare in this day and age of quick author turnover and filler pages) and nary a sentence was skipped.

Tara Quan – Warlock’s Pawn – My Virtual Book Tour Begins!

index

This post marks the beginning of my very first virtual book tour. Fellow author Christina OW was kind enough to host my launching guest blog. As such, I thought it appropriate to reflect on all the steps leading to Warlock Pawn’s publication.

Step 1: Lots of reading. I’m a devout fan of Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole, Julia Quinn and Judith McNaught. I’ll buy any book with their names on the cover.

Step 2: Lots of writing. Like any profession, it takes experience to create a good product. There are more written words languishing in my computer than there are published.

Step 3: Lots of denial. I tried NOT being a writer for over ten years. Deciding to become a romance author is one of the most illogical things I’ve ever done. I don’t regret it.

Step 4: Lots of research. Offering your manuscript to a publisher isn’t easy.  I spent weeks on the internet coming up with a short list of places that would be a good fit.

Step 5: Lots of submissions. There’s no harm in asking, but it takes a great deal of time and effort.

Step 6: Rejections and Realizations. I have a decent collection of emails saying “no” in creative and not so creative ways. I trunked my first two complete manuscripts (for very good reason).

Step 7: First yes. Tower in the Woods will always have a special place in my heart.

Step 9: First encounter with an editor. All the colors on my marked up manuscript made it clear just how much room I had for improvement.

Step 10: First sale. NovelRank doesn’t register your book until at least one person pays for it. I have a sinking suspicion this sale was to my mother.

Step 11: Starting all over again. Being a glutton for punishment, I wrote something very different from my first one.

An erotic journey filled with deception and suspense, Warlock’s Pawn is my second published work and the first book in my Captive Fates series. My hero is a warrior who uses magic as his weapon, and my heroine is a fey foreseer determined to alter her kingdom’s destiny. Amidst a fantasy desert setting, they first fall in lust and then in love with each other.

I’ve included a sneak peak below. Come visit my website (www.taraquan.com) for more about my writing. I’m also on Twitter (https://twitter.com/LaylaTarar) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/taraquanauthor).

Foreseeing the warlock’s destiny, Warlock's PawnAlia saves the man her sister plotted to kill. He returns five years later to conquer her city. A pawn in a battle for desert waters, Alia resigns herself to a political marriage and an empty bed. But when Duncan demands more than just her name, she chances losing her heart along with her freedom.

Determined to reclaim her kingdom, Anora parlays her body to remain at Duncan’s side. From within the Helicon court she spins her web, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Alia is all that stands between her and the throne. Her sister must cease to breathe before the warlock’s affection wanes.

A master tactician, Duncan has no qualms making Anora his courtesan and Alia his queen. But it is Alia’s eyes that haunt his dreams, and she soon becomes his only weakness. With the perils that haunt the Helicon court, caring for the fey is absolute folly. A warlock’s love is a fatal curse, and Alia’s death will be his undoing.

Content Notes: Intense Heat/Edgy Erotic Romance, Anal Play/Intercourse, Light BDSM Practices or Play, Ménage

Excerpt:

Gripping her chin with his thumb and forefinger, Duncan tilted her delicate face up for better scrutiny. “Those fey eyes do not lie. Even with your face covered, you are as much a symbol of Dionian power as Anora. Those in the city may not bow at your feet for fear of retribution, but they know you are their princess all the same.”

Anger flashed, turning the purple pools a darker shade. “I serve them, warlock, as a disciple of the goddess. I mend bones and brew elixirs. I provide those with need the knowledge they seek. Dionians respect the temple because it is they we serve, and they see me as one among the many who help tend their wounds. Very few know what the color of my eyes mean.”

As his mind mulled over changes to strategy, he could not suppress a triumphant smile. “Then you are a more useful pawn than I first believed. When your bloodline is revealed, you will have already earned your people’s loyalty. Alia. It is a name I shall never forget.”

For reasons he could not understand, Duncan was reluctant to release her. Nonetheless, he laid her on the cold shifting sand and rose. An arduous path awaited him, and he was eager to begin the conquest he should never have attempted to avoid. Helicon needed the waters this kingdom possessed. What he failed to acquire through marriage, he would now have to take by force.

Surprising him, Alia lifted her hand in an unmistakable gesture. “You need power to return to your lands,” she observed as their gazes met. “Take what your body demands.”

“You will be weakened beyond awareness,” he warned even as he crouched by her side. His newfound conscience and practicality warred as Duncan scrutinized her small form. She was half his weight, and standing, her head would not reach the center of his chest. She was young, her power untrained, and she was too weak to make such an offer. “You have but a trickle of magic left. If you allow me to drain your life force, the act will forever tie your mind to mine.”

Her eyes were those of one who had often faced a destiny not of her choosing. “The link goes both ways. Accept what neither of us can change. You cannot wait for the sun to rise, for the princess will not be satisfied without your body. Soldiers will arrive at dawn, and the ravine takes days to traverse. Just promise you will leave me safe inside the temple’s walls. I will be cared for while you spend the next half decade coating the sands in blood.”

He took her hand and felt the uneven rhythm of her pulse. She knew what was being offered and where this choice would lead. There was a reason his kind risked their lives to possess the fey. He overlooked caution in his courtship of Anora because she was the only fey princess he believed existed. With their blood came indescribable power, enough magic to transport him back to his lands. Only a warlock could take a fey’s power at will, and that very nature had once pitched the two races in a war that led to the near-extinction of both. Worshiped by humans as demigods, very few of either bloodline still lived.

“What do you ask? What is the payment you demand for saving the life of the Ruler of Helicon?” he questioned as he bent his head to her proffered wrist and brushed his lips against her palm.

“I ask that you be merciful,” she said as he drew in her life force, and pure white magic seeped through his body to undo all that Anora’s poison had wrought. With the bond came an understanding of words that need not be spoken, of a request made by a being who knew too well how this war would end.

Once he was sated, Duncan released the fey’s hand and gazed upon her pale unconscious form. He bent to press his lips against her cheek before fastening on the veil.

“The Dionian court will pay for its crime, and one day you will belong to me,” he whispered as he lifted the feather-light body into his arms. “But the people you protect will be safe under my rule. To that you have my vow.”

Love Forever After:

‘Love Forever After is sure to touch the heart of any person who has ever loved, more so those who have loved deeply and lost that person too soon. I found myself on a roller coaster ride of emotions from the first page to the last. William and Kristy’s story is a testament to love, and the lengths one will go to to keep that love alive. It is enchanting and haunting, poignant and exhilarating. I am looking forward to the continuation of this series from Author Christina OW. I hope you’ll put this beautiful love story at the top of your to be read list today!’

‘I read Love Forever today. Can you say WOW!!! I was blown away with this book. It was not your typical fairytail love story but took twist and turns that had me going ever which way. It keep you on an emotional rollercoster. Loved this book can’t wait for part 2.’

Fatal Jealousy:

‘This is truly an incredible story written by the amazing Christina OW! With twin sisters, caught up in the madness of love, jealousy and serial killers, Ms. OW has once again written a story that I couldn’t put down! As the FBI’s Behavioral Sciences Unit travels through the minds of serial killers, the twins are caught in between love and madness, a sickness too deep to be imagined. While I was trapped in the story, it was difficult to follow at times as it lacked a smooth transition between scenes. I still have Christina OW as one of my favorite authors to read and review and recommend you read this incredible book!’

‘What an awesome way to plot a novel, sonrisa…Start with two ultimate beauties, twins no less…then add a dash of sexy, action, romance, murder and one FBI agent having to first choose between 3 women…then after choosing, having to save the love he’s chosen and his life and even his career….

Author Christina OW has truly brought out her A game when writing this extremely well put together novel…From the start she truly flows and take you through the pages with such dynamic intrigue…that it leaves you breathless anticipating what’s next….

I recommend this novel to anyone that loves sexy, romance, mystery, action and true detective work….to pick yourself up a copy of this libro/book, sit back buckle your seatbelts and enjoy this amazing ride…WaAr
An Awesomely Amazing Ride!!!!’

‘Let me just say OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am still trying to catch my breath from Fatal Jealousy. That book just literally keep me going like the energizer bunny. I mean I could not put it down. I had to force myself to stop reading and go to bed.

This book is your classic good vs evil but with some twist. Ellie and Ellsa are twins. Ellie the good girl, Ellsa the bad one. This story goes through all of the twist and turns of how one twin has everything and how the other wants it and will do anything and everything to get it. No matter the cost.

Th book blew me away. The twist and turns just keep you going as if you were riding an nonstop rollercoaster. This book was sooooooooo good. I’m generally not a fan of suspence drama but Christina has at least made me one of her books.

The book was awesome. It is well worth the price.’

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments. They go a long way in supporting authors. This kind of support encourages authors to keep writing for you readers and we aim to entertain! 🙂

Reading books is soooo much better than watching TV! 😉

Moreno Brothers by Elizabeth Reyes

Hi all! I cam across this series because my sister wouldn’t shut up about it so I picked up a copy. I definitely saw the appeal.

Books in this series, Forever Mine, Always Been Mine, Sweet Sofie, Romero, Making You Mine.MB-banner

With this series each story is different and unique. the characters in these books grow and the readers need to grow with them to understand how the changes in these relationships.

Forever Mine is the first in the series about Sarah and Angle and just about teenage romance, Making You Mine is the last book and it’s adult and the best part is it includes a nice finale of how everyone ended up after 3years.  The snip bit about Angel and Sarah was both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

The books are intense, juvenile, annoying, comical, wonderful… just an all round series that you will definitely want to read.

My top 3 in the series:

1. Forever Mine

2. Making You Mine

3. Romero

About Author

499602I was born and raised and continue to live in sunny southern California. I’m married and have two wonderful teens. My love for writing began when I was just a kid though, I never really had any dreams or aspirations of doing it for a living. Then along came the age of eReaders and I saw an opportunity. The Moreno Brothers series has literally changed my life. I now wake up to go to work a few yards from my bed. Forever Mine is the first in the series and is currently still free on Amazon but I anticipate that changing real soon. Always Been Mine is the second in the series, then Sweet Sofie and recently released Romero is the fourth. Making You Mine is the fifth in the series and will be available tentatively this December 2011. I already have another series in mind for when I’m done with this one. I will have more info sneak and peeks of that series which will be out in 2012. But I have so many other stories screaming to be told I only wish I could write faster!

I love hearing from my readers and try to always respond as soon as I can, so feel free to reach out!

Thanks for reading!

India Was One by An Indian Review

indiaI’ve never read this kind of book before but  it is a wonderful and interesting read. It dips into the Indian culture and takes the readers on an emotional journey. It also gives readers knowledge of India’s politics and economy mixed in the romance story. It’s a great read and I recommend it to everyone.

Review by an Amazon Reader

Opening perfectly with a man’s dark walk to the place where he might see his wife, this novel captures the heart of a broken world with aching sensitivity, then backtracks to the more familiar realities leading up to it. When teachers tell how writers should “show” more and “tell” less, this author’s writing probably isn’t what they mean, but the mix of shown scenes and told detail works well to explain the background to Indian culture and events in earlier chapters(including cricket), almost like reading with the author there to explain.

Convincingly written with interesting explanation, beautiful scenery, delicious food and authentic dialog, the first third of this novel creates a fascinating picture of India. Then the action moves to the US. As an immigrant myself I smile at things Jai and Kaahi have to learn. Mr. Shah explains, “However, now that you are not in India, you’ll try to know more about India,” engendering that familiar feeling of displacement, while Arun adds, “Also, never ever refer to a cigarette as a fag.”

American, then European cultures are explained with the same sense of detail, simple maps clarifying direction and space. But the world changes as civil unrest hits India, the latter third of the novel echoing a short scene earlier where a Muslim Indian struggles to prove where his loyalties lie. What defines an Indian? What defines an American, or a European? Is it the food we eat, the sports we follow, the company we keep, or the feasts we celebrate? Or is there something in each heart beating a tune we can only hear only at home, wherever home might be?

Christine Steendam Bio:christine

Christine has been writing stories since she could put pen to paper and form words. Now, many years later, her debut novel is scheduled to be released and her second book is in the works.

Christine has spent the better half of her life owning and working with horses, and these four legged companions often find their way into her stories. After all, no work of women’s fiction would be complete without a horse or two (in Christine’s opinion at least).

She currently makes her home in the center of the world—no, really. Look at an atlas.

Heart like An Ocean:

In a society where she doesn’t belong, Senona Montez, a strong-willed and free-spirited hlowoman refuses to follow the path expected of a Don’s only child.

On the eve of her marriage to a stranger, she saddles her horse and flees everything she knows, only to discover the petty concerns of society did not prepare her for the harsh life on the open sea. She finds an unlikely protector in a reckless privateer, Brant Foxton.

Straddling the worlds of independence and privilege in 1600’s Europe, this captivating man challenges her in ways she never thought possible, shows her what living to the fullest really means, and allows her to follow her heart wherever it leads.

Heart Like An Ocean Excerpt:

hloSpain-1666

Senona looked around the room full of swirling dresses of so many shapes and colors. It was like a dream and left her overwhelmed and unable to tear her eyes away. Tonight she was a princess in her new dress with her hair curled, cascading in loose waves down her back. Tonight she was perfect.

Browsing the room, this time in search of familiar faces, Senona spotted Caton Amador, and Isidro Amato. The boys, although older, were her friends and a welcome relief to the overwhelming nature of her surroundings. She made her way around the perimeter of the room in their general direction.

Isidro was never very serious about anything and enjoyed teasing Senona, which annoyed her to no end. Caton was much more subdued and quiet, at least around her. Although they were not as close as they once had been, the families remained good friends, and the three of them spent many hours riding around the countryside or playing games in the garden. When they were younger, Isidro and Caton had been her constant companions, helping her sneak out of tea with their Madres or rescuing her from lessons with her tutor. Now they never voluntarily saw each other, but due to their families’ relationship, they found themselves together often enough.

“Senona, my Chica! You are a picture of beauty, as always,” boomed Isidro’s obnoxious and teasing voice.

Caton turned to look at the young girl. “Leave her alone, Isidro.”

“Come on, Caton. She’s glad to see us.”

Caton frowned but said nothing, turning his attention back to the pretty girl standing next to him. Isidro seemed to accept that as permission to continue, and he smirked mockingly at Senona, beckoning her. The small flock of girls that surrounded the two boys giggled, causing her to blush and become hesitant and uncomfortable. She had never seen the boys in this environment, and she quickly questioned her decision that she belonged with them.

“It’s okay, Isidro. I just wanted to say hello.”

“Well then, run along. There must be some of your friends around.”

Senona forced a smile and turned to Caton. “Hello, Caton.”

He barely acknowledged her with a brief glance and nod in her direction, and then returned to ignoring her. Unsure of how to deal with Caton’s rejection, she walked away, her eyes burning with angry tears that threatened to spill over. Why was he being so rude? Not even so much as a hello, as if he were embarrassed to be associated with her.

As she pushed her way through the crowd, she heard one of the girls laugh. “Caton, I do believe you hurt her feelings.”

Caton’s deep, unmistakable chuckle cut through the din and his voice was all she heard. “She’s a silly, strange girl. I would rather not encourage her.”

Senona expected this behavior from Isidro, but from Caton? She had always thought he was honest and simple, but his actions tonight had shown her otherwise. She had been a fool to think that these older boys were her friends.

Escaping into the shadows, she hid from the sneering glances and mocking laughter that seemed to follow her wherever she went. She had thought that tonight would be different, but nothing had changed. She was just a strange little girl.

The night was a blur, a blur of swirling skirts and obnoxious voices. To nearly everyone she was invisible. Even her Madre and Padre, who had never been overly affectionate towards their daughter, seemed to have completely forgotten her existence. But that wasn’t so different from normal. They weren’t very affectionate people ever, even towards each other.

At the end of the night, Senona lay in bed, her new dress hanging in her wardrobe, mocking her. She had realised tonight how far she fell from society’s standards, her own parents’ standards. Any illusion she had of being a princess, of being perfect for one night had been shattered. But that didn’t really bother her. The truly odd thing was that she felt a weight lifted from her shoulders. Perhaps she didn’t have to be that way. Perhaps now she had the freedom to do as she wanted. It wasn’t as if anyone cared about her anyway. She was just a strange little girl.

A Heart Broken

How much grief can a heart bear before being tested to the ultimate limit?  The War is over, Charlotte and Sanderson are reunited, and life is good … until the Army comes knocking.  They have charged Sanderson with the murder of his former captor, the despicable Lieutenant Lantz who swore to kill him and Jackson. After a make-believe trial, Sanderson is sentenced to “hang by the neck until dead” – unless he can track down and kill the notorious outlaw William Quantrill with the help of SGT Jerry Thomas, who still may be in love with Charlotte.  While Sanderson is on his blood mission, Charlotte miscarries the baby he wasn’t even aware existed.  In addition to battling her grief over the loss of their unborn baby, Charlotte must also battle a rash of hydrophobia that threatens the countryside –Sanderson included.

Excerpt from A Heart Broken:

“Don’t die till we get to have some fun, girl.” Samuel’s whiskey-ruined voice was hot in Charlotte’s ear. Somewhere behind her, Dean’s maniacal laughter pulsated with cruelty. The Bowie knife grew closer to her face, but with her arms lashed behind her, Charlotte could only watch in helpless terror as the promise of death drew nearer.

“Sanderson!” she screamed, just before the icy blade met the skin of her neck.

“I’m here. I’m not going to let anything happen to you,” Sanderson murmured into her hair. His arm, muscled and tanned, tightened around her middle. His voice was thick with sleep. “Was it that dream again?”

She sat up and traced the knife scar at the base of her neck. The air was crisp in their loft and a rash of goose bumps immediately cropped up on her exposed skin. “It was one of them. The knife one. I always wake up before they kill me, but I swear,” Charlotte shook her head to clear the nightmare from her mind, “it gets scarier every time.”

“They’ll get worse before they get better.” Sanderson propped himself up on an elbow and ran his hand down her thigh before continuing, “Mine are pretty bad right now, too. But when I wake up and look at you, I know I’m home.”

She returned his mischievous smile.

“We’ve been through a lot these past few years. Figure it’ll take our brains a little while to catch up with our bodies. The bad dreams are just our way of getting there, as I see it.” He twined his fingers through hers. “You know how I know that I’m really home?” He tugged her down close.

“How’s that?”

“I can do this.” With his free hand, he cupped the side of her face. That familiar spark blazed to life within her chest before their lips met. She closed her eyes. Softly, his kiss found her cheek, then her lips. Trembling, she let herself be taken over by her husband’s sensual caress.

“Wait, what about Minerva? Won’t she hear us?” Charlotte’s eyes were still closed. For a fleeting moment, she wondered if they’d been right to offer Minerva and baby Jay Jay their extra room. Certainly, having an empty house in moments such as these would be optimal. She pushed the thought away as quickly as it had come. Minerva was her sister-in-law, and she couldn’t imagine everyday life without tiny Jay Jay. After all, she had brought him into the world and only Aunt Charlotte could calm him down deep in those colicky nights.

Sanderson’s breath was warm in her ear, “They went out early this morning.”

Satisfied that they were alone and talk time was over, Charlotte met Sanderson’s kiss with passionate ferocity. His skin, roughened by time spent in Alton Confederate Prison, glided against hers naturally, like water over smooth river pebbles.

Finally, my love is home. I’m complete as long as he is near.

The front door squeaked open, and Minerva’s voice wafted upstairs. “Jay Jay, such a fussy boy today. Come, I’ll feed you in our room.”

Quietly, Sanderson tucked the rose-patterned quilt up over their heads as Charlotte stifled a giggle. “We were alone,” she mouthed.

He kissed the tip of her nose.

Minerva’s door clunked shut, and baby Jay Jay’s threatening whimpers ceased a moment later.

Charlotte flung back the covers. “Maybe we can continue this tonight?”

“As you wish, Mrs. Redding.”

A pounding at the door tore their gazes from each other.

“Who in the world would come calling this early in the morning?” Charlotte wondered aloud.

“I’ll get it,” Sanderson called, pulling on his britches. His voice echoed in their quaint, stone cottage.

“I’m closer,” Minerva answered. “Jay Jay is too tired to sleep.” She clomped across the floor with the infant nestled in the crook of her arm.

Charlotte peered over the edge of the loft. “Good morning, Minerva. Is Jay Jay ready for his Aunt Charlotte?”

Si, he is.” Minerva smiled and rested her hand on the doorknob. “We picked some carrots this morning. Let’s make a stew tonight.” She hefted the door open.

An unfamiliar voice boomed, “Captain Sanderson Redding!”

Sanderson froze, his shirt only half buttoned. The cold fingers of fear squeezed Charlotte’s stomach until bile rose into her throat.

“Um, ah, um,” Minerva stammered. Jay Jay began to wail again.

Charlotte dashed to the window. “Soldiers! They’re everywhere Sanderson!” She whirled, eyes wide. “Can we make it to the cave underneath Sunshine Rock where I hid from the Yankees?”

He inched to the wall and peeked out the window. Reaching out to Charlotte, he pulled her close. “There’s no way. They’re even in the trees. Every rifle out there is trained on our house, just waiting for me to make a run for it.”

“We know he’s in there, so cough him up before we come in and search the place!”

Sanderson started toward the ladder.

“No! Please, we have to try!” Hysteria was threatening to overwhelm Charlotte to such an extent that she didn’t feel like herself at all. “Please!”

“I have to turn myself in, for all our sakes. We don’t know who pointed them our way, or even why they’re here.” He began to climb down, so Charlotte started after him. She grasped the rungs and rested her head against them. Her stomach lurched and her knees threatened to give way.

Sanderson plucked her from the ladder. She clasped his hand, and they stepped to the door together. Minerva moved behind them, the baby whimpering in her arms. Their eyes met for a moment.

“Captain Sanderson Redding?” An Army officer in blue stepped forward, a scroll in his hands.

“Good morning, gentlemen. How can I help you?” Sanderson’s voice was cool and ever polite, but his grip tightened on her hand. Charlotte tried to count the soldiers, but more kept appearing from the woods.

“Captain Redding, on behalf of the United States of America, I hereby charge you with the murder of Lieutenant Robbinson Lantz.” Sanderson’s eyes widened. “Also got a list of other lesser crimes, but they don’t really matter since you gonna hang for murder anyway.”
