Thank you for inviting me to your author tell-all. Today, I’m celebrating the release of Passing His Guard, the second book in my Against the Cage series. It’s been a journey to get here and the road is far from over.

I began writing six years ago when a friend asked me to edit a book she’d been working on. I had a strong background in English and thought, why not give it a shot? But instead of editing it, I ended up rewriting it, and I learned two very important things about myself: a.) I have absolutely no editorial skill. And b.) I love to tell stories. That’s how I discovered my love for writing and it’s been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows ever since.

The first book I wrote, Until Darkness Comes, was a paranormal romance that evolved into a 4-book series. It was published in 2012 by 5Prince Publishing.

I loved the paranormal world and begin writing another series with the hope/intention to sign with a literary agent and sell the story to a mass market publisher. Though Bonded in Exile was submitted to several agencies, the common response I received was, “Great writing and great story but paranormal isn’t selling.”

I asked the agent what was selling, and she said small-town contemporary romance. That’s when I realized it didn’t matter how good of a writer I was, or how great my story happened to be, I had to write what was selling. So I decided to jump genres and enter the contemporary world. It wasn’t easy. A + B now had to = C, and writing within the confines of realism was a new and challenging task.

Question: How would I make real life interesting enough that people would want to read it?

Answer: One injured, rancorous MMA fighter and a sexy physical therapist with a damaged past and a psychotic ex-boyfriend that may just kill them both.

I wrote Win By Submission, a steamy MMA romantic suspense, and submitted the MS to a few literary agents. A couple of weeks later, I was contacted by an agent who loved the story. I signed with Spencerhill Associates and my agent, Nalini Akolekar, then sold Win By Submission and Passing His Guard to Montlake Romance.

The third book in this series, Grappling For Position, will be out in April 2016, and I have another romantic suspense releasing next fall.

So what started out as a goodwill gesture to help out a friend has turned into a life changing event for me. It hasn’t been easy, but the road to success rarely is.

I thank you for taking the time to read my tell-all and I hope you’ll check out my newest release, Passing His Guard.

Have a wonderful day!

Tidbits and fan questions for Brenda Davies

This is the second part of my interview with Heather. We get to know about her writing life in part one Introducing the Elusive Author Brenda Davies. She shared a touching back story that led to her two pennames, a wonderful tribute to the ones she loved and lost but never forgets. A lover of books since she was nine years old, Heather is one of the few authors who has succeeded without the backing of a publishing company, drawing fans of all ages- well teen and above- and soon she’ll gain the middle grade audience once she publishes those books under her real name. I’m looking forward to reading more from her.

In this part of the interview, Heather will be sharing some fan facts about herself and answering readers questions from the first interview.

Fan Questions

Ever gotten hurt walking around when you were in your mind? Any scars and embarrasing stories you would like to share?

I’ve gotten hurt many many times not paying attention. I’ve walked into counter tops, cabinets, tables, and chairs repeatedly. When I was still landscaping I was a walking bruise. I walked into trees, branches, tripped over rocks, and fell off of ladders. I cut my hand with my snips a few times and hit my legs with the sheers more times than I can count. It got to the point that if I hurt myself on a job site, and someone had to call for first aid supplies they never questioned who was hurt, it was always what did Heather do now? My husband and a couple of my friends have asked me how I ever survived this long. I may be a walking disaster but I still prefer to plot things out in my head 🙂

Which series is your favorite to write?

I love them all, all the characters have a piece of my heart and I’ve cried, laughed, and fallen in love with them all. I would have to say that The Survivor Chronicles is the most fun to write though. I can throw anything at those guys and they have to take it. I can also throw anything at those guys! There in a world where anything can happen and they never know what’s around the next turn.

Why did you decide to write Awakening under Brenda Davies?

I decided to use Brenda Davies for my more adult stuff because I thought it would be better to keep it separate from my more YA stories.

Tid-bits about Heather/Brenda/Erica

Favorite food? Cheesecake, a delicious yummy slice of plain New York cheesecake is my best friend and nemesis.

What music do you listen to and why? I listen to almost everything but country is my favorite. It’s what I grew up on with my dad and I really came to love the older stuff. I’m not a fan of the pop country, but give me some Johnny Cash, George Jones, Reba or Brooks and Dunn and I’m a happy little camper.

Are you are wine, beer or spirit kind of girl? Most definitely beer. I love tequila but unfortunately tequila and I sometimes fight, but beer and I get along just fine.

Favorite movie and why? There are so many. I love the 80’s movies like The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, The Princess Bride and The Lost Boys because of the adventure, romance, and suspense. I would have to say Jaws is my favorite though. Quint might be one of the best characters ever. He’s tough and gritty but has a big heart. The scene when he talks about his scars and the Indianapolis is just amazing and heart wrenching. Also, to this day I can’t step into the ocean without having that theme song play in my head and having to retreat safely to dry land. The book is also one of my favorites.

E-book or paperback? E-books have made all of this possible for me but nothing will replace the smell or feel of a paperback.

Favorite author and what books would you recommend? Dean Koontz, James Rollins, J.K. Rowlings. Anything they wrote!

Best month of the year, day of the week? I love June because all the flowers are blooming and the weather is perfect, plus it’s my birth month. I also love October when all the leaves are changing and AMC is doing Fearfest. I pretty much watch horror movies all day for that whole month. I also love the smell of pumpkins and hot apple cider. Plus you have to love the kids in their costumes! I would have to say Friday.

What do you do for fun? Write, read, go for walks, hang out with my family and friends, play sports and games, ride horses though I don’t get to do that anywhere near as much as I would like to anymore.

Your favorite person in the world? I can’t say just one, there are so many that mean the world to me. I have an amazing husband, wonderful parents, three siblings, numerous nieces and nephews that I love dearly, and some great friends that help to keep me sane.

Favorite quote? “Writers’ block is a fancy term made up by whiners so they can have an excuse to drink alcohol.” ~ Steve Martin. I get such a kick out of that one!

Introducing The Elusive Author Brenda K. Davies…. Part 1

I found her!

A few of my readers know I’ve been trying to find Brenda K. Davies, author of Awakened and Destined, two books that have taken the writing industry by storm with thousands of it’s readers going nuts over them. I bet I’m not the only one who has been surfing the web for a third book if there is one (we’ll all find out soon enough), and I’m not the only one who has been trying to track down the author to ask about it. I’ve been searching for her since 2012 and without her real name and no publisher, it was near impossible until Nicole, another crazy fan, commented on my post, giving me a great lead- Brenda’s other pen name Erica Stevens.

Most authors are extremely easy to find because they leave you all their links but not Brenda she left no clue not even to her other pen name, in fact as Erica Stevens another renowned name in the fantasy fiction world, she makes no reference to being Brenda Davies, thus she was dubbed ‘The Elusive Author’.

Why two pen names and who is this elusive author readers are in love with her work? Let’s find out.

Please tell us a bit about yourself do you have a spouse or significant other – kids? Pets? Where in the world do you live? Where did you grow up?

My real name is Heather. I’ve been married to my husband and best friend for three years now. We met at work when I was still landscaping and have been together for eight years. We live in Massachusetts but I was born in New York and I’ve spent a lot of time traveling back and forth between the states and my parents. We don’t have any children yet, but maybe one day. For now we have a fish, Klinger, and our new very spoiled puppy, Loki. I’d like to eventually own a farm and fill it with rescue animals and horses but that’s probably going to have to wait awhile.

003When did you first know you wanted to write?

I’ve always known it was what I wanted to do, I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer. It’s the one thing that I’ve always loved to do.

What was your journey to publication like?

I did the querying of agents for a good five years with no luck before deciding to self publish. It has definitely been an interesting journey and one that I never would have expected when I first published some of my books.

What real life events and experiences fuel your writing?

I’ve held some jobs that a lot of other people may not have even heard of, or want to do. It really helped to introduce me to a wide range of people and characters that I may not have met or got to experience otherwise.

Is writing a part time deal? If so what full time career/job do you do and how does it compare to the fulfillment you get from writing?9781476024066.225x225-75

Thankfully it is a full time deal for me now, but until I was fortunate enough to be able to focus on writing I’d been working as a landscaper for ten years. It was a great job to have as I had the winters off and during the work season I would wake up at two in the morning to write before work. Before landscaping I’d worked as a Mental Health worker in a prison while going to college, and before that I was a groom and trainer for Standardbred race horses.

You write fantasy, paranormal romance, and each book is unique to the one before what inspires you?

I’ve always loved vampires, horror movies, myths and legends. I’ll watch and read anything I can get my hands on in the paranormal genre. Some of the story ideas come to me in dreams or nightmares or from my incessant daydreaming. I live in my own mind and my own world a LOT and have a tendency to walk into things.

You use two different pen names Erica Stevens and Brenda K. Davies, why is that? What’s the story behind each one?

I lost two of my best friends ten years ago exactly one month apart. A couple of months after their deaths I was having a conversation with my friend and, I told her that if I was ever published I would use the name Erica Stevens in memory of Eric and Steve. Brenda was my grandmother’s name, K is mine and my mom’s middle initial, and Davey was a long time family friend who passed away so Brenda Davies is in honor of them. I hope to one day go through some of my older stuff and release it for middle graders under my real name. I may even start to use my real name with Erica Stevens and Brenda Davies as it would mean a lot to my parents if I did.

002 (3)What does your family think about your writing, especially of your fans who are pretty much obsessed with your writing?

Lol I’m not sure about obsessed but they are great. There have been some tough times that I’m not sure I would have gotten through without them. They never fail to cheer me up.

My mom was thrilled, she knows how much this has meant to me and how much I’ve written and worked on my stories since I was a little girl. My dad is really proud and very happy for me. One of his favorite pieces of advice is to do what you love in life as he was fortunate enough to be able to do. My husband thinks it’s great and keeps telling me I told you so. He did tell me to self publish earlier but who listens to their husbands?

Do you have a go to person who reads your manuscripts before you query them? What did he/she think of your first MS?

I do have an editor now, Leslie, who I was fortunate enough to meet by doing this. She is an awesome person and has become a good friend. She has gone through and edited a lot of what I initially published for me and she has done all the newer books I’ve released. Before I had decided to self publish no one had ever read anything I wrote. I was very protective of my stories and it’s still difficult for me to let them go.

You’ve been referred to as an elusive author with a huge following, does that shock you?

It completely shocked me. I had no idea people were even looking for me until I was doing another interview and she asked if I had any other pennames. When I told her Brenda K. Davies she was very excited and told me that people had said I was elusive and had been looking for me. I wasn’t trying to hide but I’ve been more focused on the Erica Stevens set of series. I didn’t want to combine the two because of the fact that Brenda is a lot more adult. I am hoping to have a website soon though and Brenda will have her own links and news on it.

Tell us more about your books, what more should your fans expect from you?

Lots more books 🙂 I plan to keep writing until I can’t write anymore. I’ve also been writing books since I was nine so I have a backlog that I would like to go through one day and eventually release under Erica Stevens, Brenda K. Davies and my own name. I am almost done with the second Survivor Chronicles, finishing the third Ravening book, and then I will be writing Jack’s story from The Captured Series.

Awakened and Destined for lack of a better word are awesome. I’ve never read books that have me so involved that I’m sad when I flip the last page. Now the question everyone has been losing sleep over, is there a third book and when is it coming out?

I’m glad you enjoyed them so much, it really means a lot to me when people like or love the characters as much as I do. Unfortunately at this time there isn’t a third book in that series. I do have three historical romances I’d like to release under that name when I get a chance. I may return to the Awakenings world in the future, some of those characters deserve a happy ending too.

Want to know more about Heather? Drop in next Wednesday for the continuation of this interview. If you have any questions you’d like to ask Heather please comment on this post before the 7th of October and I’ll forward them to her.

So excited about getting to know Heather, though a little sad we’ll have to wait a while for book 3 of the Awakenings series. In the meantime I’m getting cozy with the second book of the Captured Series (one, Captured is free on Amazon).

Night Owl Review of Love Forever After

Hi All!

I’m back in South Africa from a two week vacation in Kenya. It was great going home for a while for some down time and to visit my family especially my two awesome grandmothers. But it’s back to work now and here is a review of Love Forever After by Night Owl Reviews.

“William and Kristy were deeply in love. They were a couple and true love was clearly in their lives. However, when tragedy strikes and Kristy passes away William is distraught. He is devastated…the love of his life is gone for good. And suddenly everything in the worlds seems horrible. Yet, when he walks into his house and sees Kristy there…it is odd…but perhaps she didn’t die after all. Or perhaps love has swallowed him whole and he is just as crazy as everyone thinks he is.

The writing was well done. There were some parts of the book I really enjoyed. However, I felt more like this was a drama that focused around William rather than a romance because there was no falling in love involved here. The story is about a man already in love and his wife who is a ghost. There are some surprises. There is this great connection that William speaks of and thinks about when Kristy is around, I simply did not feel this deep connection. On the whole, this book was an entertaining read.”

Darkenss Arisen by Stephanie Rowe

dar_coverLet me start by saying that Stephanie Rowe has one hell of an imagination!!

I enjoyed Darkness Arisen and I must say if you are a fan of the Order of the Blade, do not miss out on this one! Ian and Alice are like death magnets fighting with insecurities that give death the upper hand. This book, unlike the others (though similar to Elijah’s story) is about a relationship that boasts you up and makes you into the person you are meant to be. Ian and Alice come into their own as they fight to save and help each their friends. It’s a weird kind of honeymoon for this two because when the end isn’t a flight back home but death.

I honestly have to say though that i expected more. Just like Elijah and Ana’s story, the previous books built this up and it made me feel I was in for an explosive read (i stalked the author that’s how impatient I was for this book) but again instead of the fireworks i felt like i got fire crackers. That might just be me.

It’sa common question who an author would like to play the roles of the characters in their books. I’ve thought long and hard about these books because they are not just another Paranormal, Romance books. They have so much more emotion in them and the characters are so specific in my mind that the actors need to fit them perfectly.
